Ok, so I was shredding some zerglings in alt.games.starcraft on Thu,
27 Jun 2002 23:00:09 -0400, when "Sean Keenan"
<x4yarules@hotmail.com>, started attacking me out of nowhere. After I
got a detector and saw he was a DT, he said "Re: A gift to you guys

Since when? Starcraft is rated Teen by the ESRB. It says so on the
damn cd case you morno :P

Not to mention the ESRB rating has absolutely nothing to do with the
quality of the game or the gamers. Hell, I could be playing
CS/SC/TA/every other 1337 T/M rated game and then get bored and play
some lame E game. It means abosolutely nothing.

My cd case, the little tiny weiner booklet inside, in the lower left,
below the Zerg, is Mature. As rated by ESRB.

Yep, Boneyards shut down a couple months after Cavedog "died" - maybe 2
years ago or so? But Boneyards was never the main place TA was played
anyway. TA is still alive and well at MSN Gaming Zone and Gamespy Arcade.
Mplayer, TEN, Kali, and HEAT all hosted TA gaming too, but sadly those
gaming services are gone now.

Well, the resourse management works a little differently in TA. Surely
you realize that when managing your resourse tightly you ALSO have the
ability to un-queue units? All I'm saying is that - if I can afford it,
I see no reason why I can't queue up 500 marines. If the situation
changes 30 seconds later and I lose a lot of resourse, or need it
elsewhere, I would simply un-queue those marines.

There is a lot of emphasis in TA on resourse management. In fact, there
is an added twist in TA that you can reclaim dead units for additional
metal. This is often the deciding factor in online games - who is able
to control the battlefield to such a degree that they are able to get
construction units in there to get that metal reclaimed. It often
results in desperate battles to keep control of areas where much wreckage
is laying around.

Damn, I guess that's why we have things like rushes, drops, etc. I guess
some likes to actually play the game, rather than letting the game play
itself. Hey, I have a good thing for you in SC. Replays. Watch other
people play, and you will only have to click a few times - to start the
replay!

I think that would be the perfect game for you.

There is none. Well there might be, but it has never occured to me to
queue up more than several hundred at once.

In TA, you don't pay for the unit until it actually begins to build.
Then it begins subtracting resourses as it builds. If the unit is 50%
complete, then you have paid only 50% for it so far. If you cancel a
unit while in the process of building it, you lose 50% of the resourse
already used in constructing it.

No, you don't begin paying for the unit until it actually starts to
build, as explained above.

Well, only the current unit which is being built. If you cancel building
of a unit in progress, you lose 50% of the resourse which has been spent
in making it so far. For example if it costs 100 metal and it is 50%
done. You lose 25 metal if you cancel it.

Well that is because in SC, you must pay up front for the units you
decide to make. In TA you can queue as many units as you like. You
don't actually PAY for it until the unit starts being built. You'd have
to try TA or Earth 2150 or some of the other RTS that use this system to
really understand I suppose.

I see. That is where it differs from SC. I suppose I should try out TA once
I can afford it.

Just one question on the ability to queue up unlimited units in TA. Would it
lag on multiplayer, especially if one is on 56K modem? Here in Malaysia,
broadband is just starting up and it is beyond my reach, yet. :(

Ps. Thanks for your detailed explanation.

Well I didn't mean that to sound as arrogant as it does. My point was to prove that
just because I disagree with many aspects of how the SC interface operates doesn't
mean that I'm a newbie who is unable to handle micro. The micro in TA is just as
intense as SC, but it's more focused on the war rather than the building aspect. SC
is just so cumbersome with the building aspect of the game that it MUST neccesarily
detract from the fighting aspect. For example, if you play SC and I play TA, and we
are both equally skilled at micro in our respective games - and we are both able to
issue 30 commands during a given time.. say, one minute. MANY more of my clicks will
be directed to micromanaging my attacks. Because of the way SC's GUI works, a much
larger percentage of your clicks will be used on more mundane tasks.

There is a limit to how much micro one person can do. In both games there is always
more micro to be done than one human can accomplish. It's very difficult for a TA
player to move to starcraft because most of the things that we take for granted have
to be micromanged in SC. But they are things that don't NEED to be micromanaged.
They are things that have little impact on the gameplay other than adding extra
clicks. That is the issue I have with SC. It's a really cool game, but god damn that
interface! I feel like it's working AGAINST me rather than helping me accomplish the
real goal of the game which is to FIGHT.
