Anyone here with any *positive* comments / observations etc?

Or is TA just too old?

TA still gives it's clones a good run for their money... :)

Not been bettered IMO, especially the pathfinding.

TA is still the best RTS out there. IMO Age of Empires comes close, but TA
is just more fun.
Forgive us for getting off track with full name/Lshaping, the discussion of
new ideas for a RTS to supercede TA is a good idea, but he would not accept
discussion or the ideas of others.
I would love to talk TA, and about possible improvements, and I think most
here would also.

Is chess too old? (about 800 years I think?) ;) I love TA. I've played
just about every RTS out there at one time or another and I still always
come back to TA.

Add another to that TA still reigns supreme list. Accolade indeed to
those responsible for its conceptualisation and creation. Particular
kudos must go to whoever had the guts and inspiration to commission
Jeremy Soule to do its score.

cheers

hehe in saying 'too old' I meant that my initial impression was that this NG
was errm...a little deserted.
I just bobbed in here after reinstalling TA for the Nth time and finding
myself playing it for ridiculous amounts of time again.

Chess is a good comparison =)

TA music is THE BEST in-game music I have ever witnessed (umm since
starquake on the speccy ;)
I've almost copied it to tape many times. Except that would be considered
far too sad by my wifee.

Gotta be both happy and worried that TA2 is in the works :-o

TA is certainly high on my list, and usually #1. I wish it was cross-
platform, though. A Linux version would rock! :)

Yeah.... well it's not perfect pathfinding-wise (sometimes units get stuck
trying to go up areas with ramps) - Red Alert 2 (which I no longer play, due
to it getting depressively boring very quickly) probably has the best path
finding...

Now StarCraft.... well there is a dinosaur of a pathfinding system - units
always end up walking long ways through enemy bases etc, or walking straight
into walls when you tell them to go up a ramp etc etc..... and also there
was the problem in SC of SCVs (peons) easily getting caught between
buildings...

Weeelll in terms of popularity TA seems not to be all that popular - it
doesn't seem to bet sold anymore in shops, at least here, while StarCraft
still does relatively well...
It's just because it's more popular, not that StarCraft is particularly
good, it's crap... ;) Sort of like tomb raider - popular and well known
game, but people must only play it to stare at a load of 3D generated
pixels, since the gameplay is almost non-existent..

I've never seen a problem yet with TA pathfinding, but have in all westwood
games.
Never played SC - tried a demo for about 3 minutes - hated the feel of it.

Don't get me wrong, I use to like it a lot, it just really is fun for a
while then just gets boring. Doesn't help that the graphics look cartoony (a
nasty little trend in westwood games that started with tiberian sun). It
just feels pointless after a while playing it, looks like crap and plays
like it...

It happens quite a lot - what seems to happen is there is a few seconds
after the SCV builds a building in which it can pass through buildings like
a ghost, then it wears out after a few seconds, or when they get out from a
building. Once they are out of a building, they can't pass through anymore
and get stuck - if you tell them to move immediately after building
something when they are going to get stuck, they just walk through ;)
It's very annoying though, especially when you basically lose an scv like
that early on in a game. :/
