Returning Newbie

Hello All - I'm new to this ng - so I thought I'd introduce myself and ask
a few questions

First of all my name Ben Griffiths - I'm from England - I bought Ta (the
orignal) soon after it was released.

I've not played TA for a wile as I've completed it several times and had
countless serial link game - but I've recently re -installed it.

I've never managed to get Core Contingency working proply it keeps craching
during the loading of missions. I've read somwhere that this is to do with
cavedog selling dodgy cd's. Does anyone know of any solutions to this
problem.

Also - i've heard that people have been making upgrades and new units (e.g.
a Star Wars one) Does anyone know where I can find anything like this from.

Most appreciated

Ben

I've never heard that explanation Ben. I've been playing TA since the
day it released. The only OTA+CC induced crashes you might be
experiencing that I'm aware of are:

(i) closing of (dropped connect) of the modem to modem link after
completion of each game. That was a design bug never addressed, and
occurs to this day with a modem connect even with the latest patch.

(ii) AMD K6 or early K6-2 class processor without the TA AMD patch
installed can cause issues.

(iii) unpatched, or mismatching TA executable/s due to CC add-on
install to an incorrect DIR sub-path, or an improper patch install
sequence.
(iv) and of course, if you're attempting to play online modem to modem
or via TCP with mismatched versions, the game will crash upon
attempting to load.

Check for any of the above conditions.

I have TA, CC, & BT. Correctly installed with the final standalone
(non-Boneyards) version 3.1c patch, the game is stable, although still
not entirely unit bug free. In addition to the original, add-ons and
final patch, to play OTA in its final form, you need to download and
install the final six units released not included in either any of the
game discs or final patch. ie: Fark, Flea, Scarab, Hedgehog,
Immolator, Necro. There are also a few Cavedog maps which were not
included. The singular substitution that I would suggest for OTA+
add-ons patched to v3.1c without playing a mod such as Uberhack per
se, is to replace the original Necro with Switek's fixed Necro.

Beware and keep a log of installing and uninstalling of individual
third party units, as there is potential for unit ID conflict which
can cause game crashes. Not everyone takes the same care with unit
design.

Most of the well known complete third party mod packs are stable. Of
course the caveat applies for you and your opponent to ensure you are
both running versions patched and modded to the same level if you wish
stable problem free games.

I heartily endorse Uberhack as one of the best and most balanced mods
available out there. There are other beauties as well, but you can
discover those from the link below for yourself.

http://www.planetannihilation.com will take you everywhere TA you want
to go.

I agree. I have also played TA since it came out. It's nice to have
something fresh that is also well thought out, and fairly well balanced.
