TA the timeless classic

Why is it that I always turn to TA for a totally satisfying gaming
experience? I have shelves of games but none has kept me coming back for
more like TA !
I have spent hours-days-months playing each campaign in easy to hard
settings over and over again, and I still keep coming back for more. When I
play the Core I hate the Arm, when I am the Arm all Core must die, what is
its never ending attraction? In my very humble opinion I have never found a
more compelling game, others have come close but never quite reached the
lofty heights achieved by TA.

Where oh where is the continuation of this game, a proud son/daughter of a
gaming masterpiece to give me lost nights sleep,a yearning to finish a level
that borders on the lunatic, missed meals and missed appointments?
cruel, cruel developers and holders of its software rights give us TA2
otherwise I will come and see you and administer a bout of corporal
punishment to your female canine in a manner against the laws of gravity ( I
will smack your bitch up!)

Rant complete

The music might have something to do with the game's massive 'enjoyment
quotient'. When done right, the music in a game can really complement
the gameplay, and TA's music is joint top of all the games that I have
seen (joint with Thunder Force IV on the Mega Drive).

What can beat rolling your tanks across the landscape to some inspiring
Wagner-ish tunes? Couple that to the battles themselves where you can
have literally hundreds of sci-fi, laser-wielding metal doom-machines on
screen at once, all pounding away at each other (with hundreds of
projectiles as well) and you have a really inspiring scene.

Finally, it had a lot of ideas that were ahead of its time - true LOS in
a 3D environment (no camera rotation - that came a bit later) that made
you want to try again with you units in a different position (is the
radar van better safe behind my tanks, or up on that hill.....).

Modern strategy games (at least ones with nice lasers and stuff) simply
don't have that many units on screen at once - you need that real sense
of scale for your battles to be complete.

What happened to Cavedog? The only real successor to TA could be made by
them (and not some generic in-house EA developer).

> cruel, cruel developers and holders of its software rights give us TA2
I don't know if the developers are actually responsible for there being
no TA2 - the publishers (or whoever holds the rights) will have to say
"We want another TA". I remember that Volition were perfectly happy to
make another Freespace game, but Interplay didn't want to make another
FS and they want under (so there will never be another Freespace).

The person mostly responsible for creating TA, Chris Taylor, has started a
new game company called Gas powered games, wich recently announced a new RTS
game in the works http://www.gaspowered.com/press.php
published by EA. This is going to be our best bet for the next TA like RTS
game. To add to that GPG has purchased the domain name SupremeCommander.com
http://www.vgap.net/sc.html wich is a fairly good indication that this will
be at least a spiritual successor to TA.

No release date as of yet, probably late 2005, they(GPG) are working on
releaseing Dungeon Seige 2 right now for holiday 2004 so any news on the RTS
we will likely get after that. just speculation, of course.

Don't talk about TA like if it was a thing of the past, Total Annihilation is still alive and kicking, the modding scene is still busy, the multiplayer gamers are still there, etc...

Here's a few link to large active TA sites :
http://www.annihilated.com (TAU)
http://www.wargrounds.com (PA)
http://www.tadesigners.com (TAD)

Here's a few places to play online :
http://www.gamingbattleleague.com (GBL)
http://www.phoenixworx.org (PW)
http://www.zone.com (zone)
http://www.tauniverse.com/cgi-bin/cgiirc/irc.cgi (TAU chat)
http://www.gamespyarcade.com (GSA)
http://www.goa.com (GOA)

GBL and PW are two fan made gaming clients, they both were created after the fall of cavedog as a replacment for Boneyard, they both features ranks, Galactic Wars, etc... So GBL and PW are the better online TA gaming clients. However, Microsoft zone is rumored to be the busiest place. The TAU chat ( irc.gnug.org ), is mainly a friendly place to chat about TA, but games are also quite often played there. GSA is the only place where you can also play TA:Kingdoms. GOA is for us Frenchies.

It would be a pity to continue re-doing the same campaigns over and over when you could be playing humans. And even if you really prefer playing campaigns rather than multiplayer (which would be very weird and strange), you could at least play some mods. The Lost Legacy and TA: Final Frontier have pretty nice campaigns.

If you are interested in mods, consult that site :
http://www.rakrent.com/rtsc/rtsc_totala.htm
Or that post I recently made on the near dead atari forums :
http://tinyurl.com/2oqcj

One last note : make sure you use the un-offocial 3.1c patch, it works better and crash less :
http://www.gamingbattleleague.com/downloads.asp

Oh, if I just install TA and CC it works fine...

But I have a lot of units I love (Arch, Gryphon, Yamato), and lots and lots
of maps...
