When I turn the music in the game off, the sound effects cut out too. When
music is switched on again, sound effects come back. There's also no way of
adjusting the music volume in the game itself... I mean, the slider doesn't
have any effect.

Any thoughts?

Don't worry about it. I updated by sound drivers, and the problem went
away.
