Are you using TA: Mutation?

I have the same problem too with the flashing of the screen but strangely
enough after some time (after fresh install) it practically disappears and I
only get a couple of flashes in my launchroom. You have the right
installprocedure but dunno about that HPI , I should leave it alone if I
were you

No.

This is what I did:

I meant that literally. This is a basic install.

I extracted the files with HPIview, and then it seemed OK. I extracted
the files in the 2000b file. But I still get an error about a missing
features which 2000b is supposed to fix (jungle metal 3).

Also, I much rather the files be in the HPI file instead of scattered
in directories.

Same here. The flickering largely stops after a bit.

Unfortunately, a lot of maps require it.

Not likely.

Running TA under new versions of DirectX causes flicker.

If it were just a problem of 60Hz, then the flicker would be constant.
What we are talking about is the screen going blank, not flickering from
a lower refresh.
