Real New-B question

today is the first time I played TA. I got this from a friend but no
manual. How do I setup hotkeys and control my units. I have been playing
Age of Empires for a while now...I was using the same logic of CTRL+a number
key for hotkeys. it didnt seem to work. I went online and read up
strategies and hints, but i didnt find how to setup hotkeys anywhere. I
would appreciate any help I could get.

Thanks ;)

First off, since you are new to TA, go and download the 3.1patch and install
it, if you haven't already. You can download it from Cavedog here...
http://cavedog.com/totala/dwnlds_frame.html

As for "hot keys", there are several shortcuts available. You can find a
list here...
http://www.planetannihilation.com/intelligence/ta/commands.shtml Just print
it out till you get them memorized.

I am assuming you were trying to make SQUADS of units. To do that just
select which unit you want in the squad, then pres CTRL 1-9. Then to select
those squads after you have created them press ALT 1-9. If you don't want
to have to press the ALT key, just open I dialog box by pressing enter then
type in +SWITCHALT and press enter. Then you will only have to press 1-9 to
select the squads you created.

Also you can select a factory and assign it a squad number (CTRL 1-9). This
can be All units produced by that factory will automatically be assigned to
that same squad.

And another hit is press the ~ key to toggle units health bars, it makes it
so much easier to make repairs to units.

And on another note, I strongly suggest not download any 3rd part units or
maps until you become good at playing TA (i.e. able to beat 3 computer
players at once on a skirmish). There are several units out there that are
just CRAP and the same for maps.

Another site that I highly recommend is...
http://shonner.com/ta/main.htm

SHONNER, like myself, is a TA purist, and has a lot of great advice on his
website.

Good Luck,

Anthony

BTW if you don't hac CC (Core Contigency) get that too, it makes TA so much
more fun. When I Got CC it came in "Holiday Pack" which had TA, CC, and
Battle Tatics in it. Since it had TA already in it I gave my old TA to a
friend of mine.

And speaking of being hooked, I am thinking of starting a 12-step program
for TA addicts. LOL

Later

Basically it is an expansion pack. I adds some new Missions, maps, units,
and shortcut keys.
