You can always play TCP/IP or direct modem with your friends. I have bought
a few extra copies to give away (they are cheap right now!) so I can have
more people to play with. We even have small LAN parties & stuff. Go for it.
You can usually start a newbie game at the above sites as well, and getting
your teeth kicked in a few times will only make you better!
