Withdrawal symptoms! Help please!

It's no good. I've gone too long without my favourite RTS. Only problem is, it always
crashes on me!

The problem is I have a metric bucketload of units installed. I've tried the DDraw
hack/fix but it doesn't work too well. TA Conflict Crusher hasn't helped much either.
The problem is that it will run, but as soon as certain units attempt to fire, (I've
noticed certain third-party towers do that, but I forget what unit pack they were
installed by) the game bombs to the desktop. I could try removing the unit in
question (once I remember which unit it is) but that seems incredibly tedious.

Has anyone got any suggestions for a quick fix?

The early versions of the stationary nano towers had a bug which would
cause a saved game to crash either immediately or within minutes of
the game starting.
If you have the nano towers ,try removing them and see if the game is
more stable.

If the game is crashing when a unit tries to fire , then it means that
you have either more than 255 weapon IDs ,or conflicting weapon IDs,or
a scripting error with that particular unit.
Try removing that unit and see what happens.

No, I don't have the nano towers installed. Hadn't heard of the bug though.

Well, I'm using the Yankspankers hack/fix, which theoretically ups the number of
weapon IDs to something obscene (like 16,000 or so) but I am aware that this is
unsupported and quite possibly likely not to work.

Removing the unit in question would be an option, except the problem is that I'm not
certain what units are affected. I had removed a defense tower I knew to be crashing,
but more recently another unit caused it to crash. The unit in question was
controlled by the AI and not on the screen, and the only clue I have as to the
identity of it is the sound of the weapon; like the Merl and other missile-launching
tanks. (the type that go straight up then loop round)

It doesnt work.
Its supposed to allow 16000 unit IDs and 2048 weapon IDs ,but the
weapon ID bit doesnt work at all,and the unit ID bit works but is
unstable .
Get rid of it ,and then check with TACC that you arnt over the 512
unit limit and the 255 weapon limit.
Note that some maps come with features that consume both weapon IDS
and unit IDs,so make sure that you have all the maps that yo want to
play in the TA direcatory when you run TACC.

Well, I've disabled a ton of units, and all I have remaining are TAUIP files (I
forget what version, unfortunately) and about 5 units I cobbled together in about 5
minutes myself. In addition I have The Core Contingency installed.

Now, if I have the TAUIP files enabled, TA crashes. Disable them, TA works, but
without a sizable number of my favourite units. I try and use TACC to see if there's
a conflict, but EVERY SINGLE TIME, WITHOUT FAIL, it deletes the
tauip-armcoreunits.ufo file. EVERY TIME. Consequently it finds no conflicts and TA
throws a wobbly because half the resources the units in the other TAUIP files - the
ones that survived - aren't there. Can anyone shed some light on to why it's being
retarded?

*sigh* Nevermind, found out what the problem was. In my efforts to free up build menu
slots, I removed the fortification walls from the TDF files and I removed the
associated FBI files. However, I left 0-byte TDF files in the archive's download
directory, and that's what was making TACC choke.

You might find that the latest version of TACC doesnt like the TAUIP
unit set.
In particular it doesnt seem to like the single large rev31.gp3 file.
Older versions however work OK.
You might like to try the TAUCP unit set which doesnt crash and IMHO
is a hell of a lot better than TAUIP.
Its available at

Well, TAUCP 1.8 does crash less if I use the default AI; the problem is, having
installed the TA:Mutation version, I can't enable the BanzAI or the Mostly Harmless
AI. If I do, it crashes just as before - before it even shows the map screen.

I'm not quite sure what other information I can give, other than the fact that I have
six units I've cobbled together - using a grand total of 0 weapon IDs when put
together - and The Core Contingency on top of TAUCP. Given that, any thoughts?

OK, all I can suggest is that with TAUCP , it uses itself all unit IDs
(that is 512) and all weapon IDs (that is 255).
You cant have any extra units with TAUCP.
Dont use TAM with TAUCP,and make sure that its installed over a
totally clean install of TA.
ie TA , CC, then the TA Rev 31 patch.
No TA BT.
No mutators , no extra units , no nothing.
TACC gives the wrong results with the TAUCP unit set so dont use it .
Ive been playing with TAUCP unit set rock solid ever since it was
released, not a single crash. (both in skirmish & mutiplayer).
Note that you cant play missions with TAUCP.
