Networked games

Just got my kiddos into this game (they're now at the age to appreciate
it). Each has their own computer, so family network mayhem could be a
blast.

Could be.

The other night, my son and I played a game against each other. Each
has a CD, his was version 3.0a on Win98, mine's 3.1 on WinXP. (I've
since remedied his version issue, but anyway...) When using the
"Internet TCP/IP" connection, he couldn't see the game I set up unless
I put my IP address in the search box (the one you can leave blank to
search for servers). Played a couple of games, worked well.

Tonight, we tried a 3-player match. One of my daughters has the 3.1
patch on her PC so she joined us. The problem was that now my son's
machine couldn't connect to my game at all. He'd highlight it, click
"Join", then after about 20 seconds the list of available games (just
the one) would redisplay. Same with my daughter's machine. Tried
starting the game on his machine, I couldn't see it at all. Tried
starting it on my daughter's, and I could see it but my son couldn't.
Tried it on my machine again, and now she can see it but for some
reason he can't.

You can see how this can be a tad frustrating.

We're using a Linksys broadband router/switch, although I did have to
share a connection on the switch with my daughter's & son's machines,
so they are on a hub hooked into the switch. All other networking
functions, both local and on the Internet, work just fine. (E.g. they
can play another networked game just fine inside or outside our home
network.) So what in the world could be the problem?

Any clues would be greatly appreciated.

Wow, been a while since I looked in here. And Wow again, you got kids that
play TA. Mine is 2.5 yrs so I got a while yet. You may have already done it
but try your question in the Tech forums at these sites. You may get some
helpful info there.

I have played local LAN games like that with 2, 3 and 4 people and didn't do
anything more special than what you describe. It just worked. Sorry I'm no
help but maybe the web site will get you there. Interesting to hear what you
find out.
