Okay, I surrender.....XP Question

So far, my experience with Windows XP has NOT been fun.
I just saw TA in a store the other day, remembered how much fun an ex-roomie
of mine had playing it, and bought it straight out. Brought it home,
installed it, fired it up and......black screen. I get sound okay, but no
image. At all.

Did the Properties and then the Compatability thing, but no matter what I
do, I can't seem to get it to run. I downloaded the 3.1c patch and ran it -
nada. Nothing.

I've tried looking all over for "XP Patches" but only found that one 3.1c
patch. HELLLLLP

Thanks in Advance,
Steve

PS - I'm glad I found this newsgroup - I'm DYING to try this game out....

PS - already tried this from a Community Page:

I have XP and my total annihilation game doesnt work even after step 1
and 2, what can i do?

Ok, go to the start menu, and then programs, and accesories, and Program
Compatibility Wizard. The first time click next, the second time choose the
bottom one: "I want to locate the program manually." Click next. Then find
the total.exe in your total folder. click next. Now do Windows 98, and click
next. Then chose 256 colors, and 680 x 460. next. if that works your fine.
if it doesnt, move up one on the windows programe. go from windows 98 to
windows 95. now it should work. This is the XP PROCEDURE.

Next stupid question - WHERE the hell do I find the version number? I'm
pretty sure I've looked everywhere for it, and can't seem to find it. But
yes, I did run the 3.1c patch - it ran, and said it updated TA, but didn't
seem to help the problem....

Argh..

I'm running v 3.0 of TAK (version 8 of DirectX) and unfortunately for you
the only place I can find the version number for TAK is on the opening
screen without going into the registry. If you open regedit and search for
Cavedog you should be able to uncover the version number for TAK and also
the version for DirectX if you search for DirectX. Just don't go trying to
change anything there, it'll do more harm than good (if any good at all).

You might be able to revert back to v 3.0

Sorry about the other (double post) everyone, hit post instead of
reply...this is what I mentioned in my other post:

Pentium 4, 1.9 Ghz.
192MB of RAM
TA Version 3.0.0.1 (After running patch)
Tried it with and without Core Contingency installed.
Tried uninstalling and re installing DirectX several times, from version 5
to version 8.1.
Video Card - looks like none - THAT may by problem - it's just using the
software for video.

Problem I am having - after staring game, screen goes black. Sound still
plays (IE game is running) but I get NO visual.

I'm actually thinking of seeing if I can just download the demo from the net
and see if THAT works at least.

OK, once after doing a format&restore of my computer, I forgot to instal the
drivers for the Voodoo 3000 video card that is in it. When I tried to play
a game, the screen would go blank, but I still had sound (just as you
describe). Then I rembered that I din't instal the drivers for the Voodoo
card. After I installed the drivers, all was fine.

So....make sure you have the proper drivers for you video card.

And to further complicate your troubleshooting/decision process the symptom
you describe can also be caused by exceeding your monitor's refresh rate.
I'm not sure that this is applicable here, but you may want to look into it.

blah - I've given up - I think that whatever generic video card is in here
is just too sucky to work. I just spent 20 minutes on the phone with the
wife explaining that I need a new video card.....looks like I'm gettin' one
for christmas :)

Till then I'll stick with Command & Conquer
Thanks for all your help thus far though,
Stevie Z

video card drivers. get the latest ones for your card. since XP hasn't been
around for long, i imagine that the drivers won't be very 'mature' yet
unfortunatly. one of the risks of being an 'early adopter'.... i'm still
with win 2k for that reason

There's been a few probs concerning Video cards & XP, I've got a mate who
couldn't get his VooDoo3 card to work with XP, couldn't get drivers from
several sites to work, Ended up going & buying a new card, A Gforce4 card.
Works fine with that card.

Aido.
